Where do germs come from?
Germs are everywhere. They can accumulate on our hands when we touch people, contaminated surfaces, food, animals or their waste.
How do we spread them?
Primarily, hand-to-hand contact. We infect ourselves by touching our eyes, nose or mouth. We infect others by touching them or the surfaces they touch, such as doorknobs.
What illnesses do they cause?
Everything from the common cold and hepatitis to food-related illnesses. About 76 million people in the U.S. contract a food-borne illness each year. About 5,000 die from it.1
